some_modes.sh
A bourne again shell script included in the package to generate modelines easily for the most common resolutions.
Generate modelines for xfree86 servers
Part of videogen(1x).
videogen <-i>
videogen [-s]
[-n]
[-fb]
<-clk=freq>
<-width=pixels>
[-height=pixels]
<-hf=freq>
<-vf=freq>
<-hsync=duration>
videogen generates Modelines for XFree86 servers to make the screen refresh rate as high as possible. Can print the timings in Linux framebuffer device format as well.
-s
Silent mode suppresses all output other than the generated Modeline itself.
-n
The Non-free-Nvidia mode. The calculations will be checked and corrected if they do not comply with stronger specifications used by the closed-source Nvidia drivers. You do not need this switch for the normal nv driver.
-fb
In silent mode, output is in fbset format instead of X format. At normal verbosity, this option has no effect, both the X and the fbset format will be printed.
-clk=freq
Set freq to the maximum dot clock frequency of your video card.
-width=pixels
Set width to the desired horizontal resolution (screen width in pixels).
-height=pixels
Set height to the desired vertical resolution (screen height in pixels).
-hf=freq
Set freq to the maximum horizontal refresh frequency of your monitor.
-vf=freq
Set freq to the maximum vertical refresh frequency of your monitor.
-hsync=duration
Set duration to the minimal horizontal sync pulse duration of your monitor. if you don't know it, no problem: version 0.20 and up will use a default that is believed to be safe for most cases.
The error messages will not be printed if you are using the -s switch, but the error values described below should always be returned.
invalid horizontal resolution
invalid maximum dot clock rate
invalid horizontal refresh frequency
invalid vertical refresh frequency
If your display adapter does not have a programmable clockchip then you will need to get a list of available clocks somehow and enter these as the maximum dot clock frequency. This way videogen will have to adjust (decrease) the horizontal retrace frequency to get exactly the given dot clock rate.
some_modes.sh

/etc/X11/XF86Config(-4)
This is the common Xserver configuration file where the Modelines generated with videogen can be used. Currently this must be done by hand.
